Originally built in 1847 as a townhouse for the family of a sashmaker, 632 Hudson Street was converted to a general store and produce market late in the 19th century by Hugh King, whose name appears on the pediment. Purchased by the Esteve family in the 1930’s, the building became home to an import export business and chorizo sausage factory, which it remained until 1992. In that year the present owner acquired the building, restoring and renovating it with a grand theatrical gesture that spans both space and time, and leading to its present incarnation as 632 onHudson.

Beneath an Italian Renaissance ceiling mural, a central 40-foot atrium links the tiny library of an English manor house, the fireplace of a French chateau, a grand staircase leading to a re-creation of an Edwardian kitchen with a twelve-foot trestle table and the palatial master bedroom and bath.

Continuing up the atrium staircase is a small penthouse deck opening onto a lovely 1,000 sq. ft. planted roof garden, complete with a gazebo created out of an old water tank. The rooftop has recently been expanded to include a beautiful new area with glass floor centerpiece and Shinto-style gates.

This architectural wonder gives fantasy and practicality equal play.
